COASTAL REGIONAL GUIDE

The Oaxaca Coast

A string of small coastal villages between Huatulco and Puerto Escondido, each with its own character.

THE COASTAL CORRIDOR

One Coast, Many Villages

Stretching along the Pacific rim of southern Oaxaca, this coastal corridor connects the sheltered coves of Bahías de Huatulco to the open point breaks of Puerto Escondido. Between these two poles lies a sequence of distinct coastal settlements, each defined by its own geography, rhythm, and architectural vernacular. From the dramatic rocky bluffs of San Agustinillo and the tranquil bohemian coves of Mazunte to the sweeping open beaches of Zipolite, the coastline offers an unhurried cadence where the Sierra Madre del Sur meets the Pacific.

National Geographic included Oaxaca's Costa Chica coastline in its Best of the World 2026 list.

REGIONAL CONTEXT & INFRASTRUCTURE

Life on the Coast

An unvarnished guide to daily practicalities, regional transit, community rhythms, and essential public infrastructure across the southern Oaxacan coastline.

Lifestyle and Community

The coast runs on two rhythms. High season fills the towns with visitors and seasonal residents. The quiet months hand the shoreline back to year round locals. Each stretch has its own character, from surf beaches to fishing villages to resort bays. Spanish carries daily life, English is widely spoken.

Healthcare Access

Clinics, pharmacies and public facilities sit in the larger towns, covering routine care, dentistry and basic diagnostics. Specialist treatment means travelling inland to Oaxaca City. Most foreign residents carry private or international cover with evacuation. Distance from town matters here, so weigh travel time when choosing where to buy.

Getting Here

Two airports serve the coast. Huatulco (HUX) carries domestic routes plus seasonal links from the United States and Canada. Puerto Escondido (PXM) connects through Mexico City and Oaxaca City. The coastal highway joins the shoreline, and the Barranca Larga highway has cut the drive from Oaxaca City sharply.

Getting Around the Coast

A car is the practical choice for anyone living here, since the coastal highway links the towns and most properties sit off it. Colectivos and local taxis cover shorter runs cheaply and run often. Within towns, walking and golf carts handle daily errands. Roads vary once you leave the highway.
